Chapter 9. Analysis of Natural Disaster Cases in Indonesia

Natural disaster events in Indonesia provide practical illustrations of the relationship between hazards, community vulnerability, preparedness, and disaster-management capacity. The 2004 Aceh earthquake and tsunami demonstrates the enormous effects of geological disasters on human life, infrastructure, society, and the economy. The Yogyakarta 2006 and Palu 2018 earthquakes show that disaster impacts and response challenges vary according to regional conditions, population density, infrastructure quality, and early warning capacity. Volcanic eruption cases also demonstrate impacts on health, agriculture, and communities living near hazardous areas. Urban floods and landslides reveal connections between disasters, urbanization, land-use change, deforestation, and environmental management. Comparing these cases provides a basis for evaluating mitigation, early warning, evacuation, rehabilitation, and reconstruction.
