Chapter 3. Circular Economy in Agriculture

Authors

Synopsis

This chapter examines the concept of the circular economy in agriculture as an alternative to linear production systems. The circular economy seeks to retain the value of resources through reuse, processing, recycling, and the return of materials to production systems. In agriculture, crop residues, harvest by-products, livestock manure, and biomass residues can be utilized as resources to produce organic fertilizers, alternative feed, energy, bioproducts, or materials for soil restoration. Its implementation requires appropriate technology, knowledge, institutions, markets, regulations, incentives, and value-chain governance.
